The otto of rose is the essential oil, steam distilled from the flowers of Rosa Damascena. In Bulgaria, water distillation is also carried out, but all stills are of comparatively modern design. The rose flowers are distilled quickly after harvesting and the distillation demands considerable experience. It is common practise to redistil the distillation waters and to bulk the oils from the two distillations.

Odor: floral character with a strong rosy facet Use: Rosa damascena, more commonly known as the Damask rose, is a small shrub with thorny stems. Originally from the Syrian capital Damascus, it is highly sought after for its fragrance and its many therapeutic properties. The first pure rose essential oil is said to have been produced by the Persian physician Avicenna in the 10th century. Distillation of the fresh flowers also produces rose floral water. With its very low yield - about 0.03% - Damask rose essential oil is a rare and valuable essence. It takes 400 kilograms of fresh flowers to produce 120 grams of essential oil. However, yields of the concrete and absolute are much higher. Millions of flower petals are therefore required to obtain a few grams of this pure liquid gold. The flowers must be picked early in the morning when the fragrances are concentrated, and should be processed as quickly as possible, before the levels of perfume oils decrease. During harvest time, in May and June, the producers’ distillation units operate around the clock. Moroccan rose essential oil has a pronounced floral character with a strong rosy facet. |
