Tonka bean Absolute Brazil
Odor: gourmand, warm aroma with almond-like accents Use: The Dipterix odorata tree is a tropical tree that reaches about 30 meters in height. It grows in Brazil, Guyana, and Venezuela. This common Central American species produces a hard wood - called "Brazilian Teak" – often used in shipbuilding. The pink-purple flowers are lipped and winged, and the name, Dipterix, is, in fact, a reference to the shape of the flowers, as it means "two wings" in Latin. The blossoms give way to fleshy fruit containing a single seed – the tonka bean, also called cumaru in Brazil. The beans are harvested once they have fallen from the tree. The fruit pulp is removed and the seeds are then macerated in alcohol. This causes a "frosting" of the beans, the formation of pure coumarin crystals on their surface. Tonka bean extraction produces an absolute with a gourmand, warm aroma with almond-like accents. Tonka bean is a valuable raw material in the perfume industry. |

Tonka Bean Absolute (BRAZILIAN)
Odor: characteristic Use: Arctander has this to say “Tonka absolute is a semi-solid or crystalline mass of pale amber or pale brownish-yellow color. Its odor is very rich, sweet and warm, distinctly coumarinic-herbaceous, with a prune-like or carmellic-sweet undertone. The absolute consists of from 20 to 45% coumarin, but the effect of a true tonka absolute goes far beyond that of the coumarin contained in the absolute. In this fact lies the explanation for the continuous use of tonka absolute today, almost after a century after the appearance of synthetic coumarin on the perfume and flavour market. |

Tonka Bean Absolute (VENEZUELAN)
Odor: characteristic Use: Adam Michael has this to say about Tonka Bean Absolute (VENEZUELAN) “Grown and produced in Venezuela, this masterpiece absolute provides something extra aromatically in comparison to the Brazilian grown and French produced alternative we also carry. The opening notes are classic tonka – richness, warmth, dry powdery aspects galore with milky and cloying vanillic qualities. The heart notes are coconut flesh, powdery coumarinic with a joyous sweet grass and nutty undertone. The base notes are rich coumarinic, sweet pudding, somewhat far flung Oriental spicy with the usual dry hay, fruit, and warm herbaceous injection. |

Tonka Bean Absolute
Odor: characteristic Use: The tonka bean comes from teak, a tropical Latin American tree that produces fruits, each giving one bean. Once harvested, the fruit is dried and soaked in rum and dried gain for almost a year. During the drying process, they become covered with small coumarine crystals which intensify the aroma of the extract. The absolute is often used as a substitute for vanilla. |
