Odor Description: | Floral-muguet, fresh, green, sweet Arctander describes the odour as: “Sweet-floral, at first delicate and refreshingly mild, but often increasing in odor strength after short olfactory study. The floral notes are mild, light and resemble Lily of the Valley. The tenacity is good, and the odor diffusion increases significantly when the material is properly blended with lower boiling odorants or modifiers.”
He goes on to suggest it is: “one of the most frequently used floralizing perfume materials. Originially introduced as a ‘Muguet’ material, it finds its way into almost every type of floral fragrance, and a great many nonfloral ones. Its concentration in perfumes may vary from about 1% (which rarely gives effect unless supported by parallel materials) up to 30 or 40% in straight floral types. It is almost a ‘must’ in Muguet (at certain price levels) and Peony, Lily, Sweet Pea, Narcisse, Lindenblossom, etc. and it had a monopoly on these types for more than 40 years during which period not one material appeared that could truly replace Hydroxycitronellal.” |

Hydroxycitronellal 75% / 25%
Odor: Floral-muguet, fresh, green, sweet Use: NOTE: offered here with the addition of 25% hydroxycitronellol to stabilise the aldehyde avoiding problems with oxidation that are otherwise significant. Blending of the two materials is done by Pell Wall and this is the form in which hydroxycitronellal is used in our own work.
The odour profile is almost identical with hydroxycitronellal alone with some additional fixation; the mixture forms a hemi-acetal as described by Bedoukian:
“ … there are certain limitations to its stability. For this reason, its dimethyl acetal is sometimes employed, although it does not have the power and character of the aldehyde. Another aromatic often used with hydroxycitronellal is its alcohol. The latter has a subdued character but blends well with the aldehyde. A small amount of the alcohol stabilizes the aldehyde, probably through hemiacetal formation.”
and then later in the same chapter:
“When aldehydes are added to alcohols, a reaction often takes place as evidenced by a rise in temperature, changes in refractive indices, and other physical changes which result from the formation of hemiacetals.” |
